Artist Statement
I’m drawn to water - the sea, lakes, ponds, and lagoons. There’s a constant movement in the ripples and eddies, a beating rhythm in waves lapping the shore, and dancing patterns in the light that trips across the surface. A very unique light surrounds these bodies of water, a light that amplifies the weather, from sharp sunlight reflecting back in a thousand shards of sparkling diamonds, to moody grey pools that blossom into upside down cotton balls. I’m fascinated by that unique light and how it can change what it touches, morphing colours and sliding the tangible toward abstraction.
Living on the “island” of southern Ontario surrounded by the magnificent Great Lakes, the influence of water is a constant. The lakes offer a new palette every day, the vista transformed by the changing light as it bounces off the water. Travel has exposed me to different seascapes, from the soft clear air of the English seaside, to the vibrant colours of the Gulf of Mexico, and the sharp cliffs and coves of the Italian coast. Ever changing and ever evolving, the sea is a continuous source of inspiration.
I work in a variety of media, choosing the ones that best express the spirit of each piece. I alternate between the broad strokes and thick fluidity of acrylic paints, the translucent and ethereal qualities of watercolours, and the soft, smudgy moodiness of pastels depending on the particular sense of light that I’m trying to capture. Digital painting allows me to play with many different techniques. My photography blurs the line between figurative and abstract as I try to capture that unique light, and blending photography with acrylic painting opens yet another avenue of expression.
